Physiotherapy VS Orthopaedic Surgery


Whenever someone suffers an injury to his musculoskeletal system such as muscle strains, sprains, ligament tears, broken bones or dislocations, he will have to make some difficult decisions on whether to go for physiotherapy or undergo orthopaedic surgery. For example in the case of an Anterior Cruciate tear, the patient will need to ask himself whether he still intends to continue with the sports in future or he will stop playing it forever. In the case of a serious fracture, surgery is also required to allow proper healing. Physiotherapy can help to strengthen the muscles, tendons and tissues surrounding the injury so that they can support and help compensate for the injured part. The chances of someone suffering the same injury is higher if surgery is not performed. As such, most surgeon will tell patients to undergo surgery if they really wish to participate in the sports in future.
Depending on the extent of the injury, certain treatment is more effective as each has its own pros and cons. For example, physiotherapy can help in muscle strains and sprains. Obstacle Race Training: Three Effective Workouts


Obstacle racing is rising in popularity, attracting up to 1 million Americans each year. If you're thinking of signing up for an obstacle race, you'll need to train for it. Your training should focus on endurance, strength, and mental toughness. These three workouts will help you improve in all three areas.
1. Barn Workout
The Barn Workout is a great routine to build strength and endurance. This one is best suited for intermediate-advanced exercisers.
Warm-Up
Easy jog for ½- 1 mile (or as much distance as you can cover in 5 minutes)
Stretch for 5 minutes, focusing on major muscle groups:
Hamstrings
Glutes
Quads
Back
Chest
Circuit
1. 30 Burpees
2. 30 Burpee/Pullups
3. 30 Pullups
4. 30 Box jumps
5. 30 Medicine Ball Squat Throws
6. 100 Jumping Jacks

2. Deck of Cards
Deck of Cards is a good total body circuit that will add variety and intensity to your training. You may also find it kind of fun, too.
Although it's ideal for advanced fitness levels, it can also be customized for beginners.
How It Works
Colors and/or shapes represent an exercise. You can pick what exercise each represents. Some ideas:
Clubs: Push-Ups or Burpees
Spades: Pull-Ups or Rows
Hearts: Squats, Lunges, or Deadlifts
Diamonds: Ab exercise of choice
  • Intermediate-Advanced Suggestions: Hanging knee tucks or V sit-ups
  • Beginners: Crunches on stability ball or floor
The numerical and face cards denote the number of reps you do per exercise. Jacks, kings, & queens = 10 reps; aces = 11; jokers can be thrown out or designated to represent another rep number.
Go through the entire deck and perform the exercises for the specified number of reps. If you're a monster-advanced exerciser, you can even try going through the deck twice!
The Deck of Cards workout can be adjusted for beginners so that you complete half the deck only or complete the deck without the face cards.
3. Beginner Intervals: Walk-Jog or Jog-Run
If you're new to running, intervals can help you work up to running your goal number of miles consecutively, water-break free.
Alternate walking-jogging or jogging-running for predetermined ratios for 3 miles. If you're new to running, you may do a walk:jog ratio of 2 minutes:1 minute.
If you have some experience running, but can't run three consecutive miles consecutive without stopping for a rest, you may try a jog:run ratio or 2 minutes:4 minutes. You can also do a variation of something in between 2:1 and 2:4 ratios.
The key to this workout is to push yourself and make yourself devote a greater portion of your session to running or jogging each time and less to the "recovery" bout of your training.
Cool down by stretching for 8-10 minutes, focusing on lower body stretches.
These are just a few workouts that will help you train for an obstacle race. Since this race will test both your endurance and strength, you can also use these workouts to build up towards integrating both strength and running in a single workout. In the long run, you'll want to train to simulate the challenges of an obstacle course race.

Diabetics Know That "Diet" Is A Four-Letter-Word (And The First Three Letters Spell DIE)!


Society is brutally inundated with advertisements from so many diet programs and infomercials that promise quick results if we will follow their plan. They tell us we will not only lose weight quickly but rid ourselves of all our problems and live happily ever after in the process. Does it work that way? Does weight loss bring eternal happiness and contentment? The diet industry wants us to believe that it does. It is a multi-billion dollargimmick in my humble opinion.
For several years, I was a member of Curves fitness center. I was paying them $30 a month even though I already had a stationary bike and treadmill, as well as a set of free weights and various strength bands to build muscle. One day I was standing in what was our guest room (we turned it into our workout room), but it ended up being the towel-hanging room (the treadmill made a great towel rack). One morning I stood in the doorway of the room and like a flash of brilliance it hit me: "Why am I paying money to Curves when I have all this equipment? This is crazy!" I cancelled my membership and saved the $30 a month to pay for good walking shoes. I vowed I'd go it on my own from that point on and I never looked back.
If you'd rather enjoy the friendship and comradery that a fitness center offers, then by all means do what works for you. In my case, it just happened that the money could be better spent on walking shoes. If there is one lesson I've learned in my journey to wellness, it is this: Any diet without an exercise plan will fail. By the same token, any exercise plan without proper nutrition on a regular basis will fail. One does not work without the other.
So, before you spend a lot of money on yet another diet plan that promises you the moon, consider what you could do on your own. Before you spend oodles of money on a gym membership, take a look around you. Do you have room for equipment at home? Our little guest room holds a treadmill and stationary bike (and a TV of course). We saved money by purchasing used equipment. The key is to use it. It's not worth a plug nickel if it doesn't get used.
Can't even afford used exercise equipment? What changes could you make today that would not cost you a dime? Do you have fifteen minutes twice a day to take a walk at work? Take your walking shoes to work and walk! Can you give up fast-food at lunchtime to brown bag? Fix nutritious lunches. It's really the little changes that will matter over time. Small and consistent, but best of all - lasting! The weight will come off slowly, but itwill come off - and stay off! It's not a "diet", but a lifestyle!
